SIP Apprenticeship Standards Update

The SIP facilitated Life Science and Industrial Science Trailblazer (LSIS) continues to make good progress.

  • The Level 7 Research Scientist Standard has now been approved by the Government at a funding band of £18k.
  • The proposal to develop a level 7 Clinical Pharmacology Scientist has been approved with conditions by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) and will now progress to the End-Point Assessment (EPA) development stage.
  • Cranfield University will be delivering the Bioinformatics Scientist Standard apprenticeship from September https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/courses/taught/bioinformatics-masterships

IfATE Manufacturing and Engineering Standards Review

Now that the pilot standards review has been completed with the Digital Route an important programme is being initiated by IfATE to review the engineering and manufacturing standards. With SIP support, LSIS is reviewing its earliest Trailblazer developed standards prior to the formal review to ensure that they are current, up to date, fit for purpose for our industries and aligned to the new IfATE policy.

The E&M review will start in October for a period of 18 months and it is expected that the Science Industry Maintenance Technician (SIMT), Science Manufacturing Technician, (SMT) and Science Manufacturing Process Operator (SMPO) will be amongst the 50 Standards under review.

The SIP developed map of Standards relevant to the science-using sector can be downloaded here.
